Indian citizens can use the UK's employer-sponsored Skilled Worker route only for degree-level jobs paying roughly £41,700 a year or more with a licensed sponsor; separately, Indians aged 18-30 can enter a free random ballot for the 2-year Young Professionals Scheme, which needs no job offer.
What the employer must have
- Must hold a Home Office sponsor licence and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for a job on the eligible occupations list
- Must pay at least £41,700/year or the job's official 'going rate', whichever is higher (limited lower cases from £33,400)
- No sponsor is needed for the India Young Professionals Scheme — but that visa is won by ballot, not by job offer
What you must do before you leave
- No Indian emigration clearance is needed for the UK — it is not one of the notified ECR countries, so eMigrate clearance does not apply even to ECR-stamped passports
- If a recruiter is involved, deal only with agents holding a valid registration certificate from the Protector General of Emigrants; sub-agents are not permitted under the Emigration Act, 1983
- Check your employer's name on the UK government's public register of licensed sponsors before signing or paying anything
- If you are 18-30, you may enter the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot (free); you can only apply for that visa if randomly selected
Things to watch
- Salary thresholds rose sharply in 2024-25 (now £41,700 standard since 22 July 2025) and change often — recheck GOV.UK at application time
- Since 22 July 2025 sponsored jobs must normally be degree level (RQF6-equivalent); a limited Temporary Shortage List of below-degree roles remains sponsorable only until 31 December 2026, with no dependants allowed — many mid-skill roles no longer qualify
- The care worker / senior care worker route is closed to new applicants from outside the UK
- Young Professionals Scheme places are limited — GOV.UK confirms 3,000 places for 2026 and that ballot entry is free; selection is random and ballots open only in short windows (February and July in 2026)

THE MOST A REGISTERED RECRUITING AGENT MAY LAWFULLY CHARGE YOU is ₹30,000 plus 18% GST — ₹35,400 in total, once. Not per year, not per document.
