Bahrain has a standard employer-sponsored work permit system (run by the LMRA) that Indian workers use at large volume — the employer applies for your permit, and if your passport is ECR you must also get Indian emigration clearance through eMigrate before flying.
What the employer must have
- Must hold an active Bahraini commercial registration and an LMRA account, and file the work permit through the Expat Management System (EMS) — the worker cannot self-petition
- Must be Bahrainisation-quota compliant and pay the permit fees (BHD 195/year + BHD 5 admin)
- For hires with ECR passports, the employer or its India-registered recruiting agent must process the job through India's eMigrate system so emigration clearance can be granted
What you must do before you leave
- Check your passport: ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR — Bahrain is on India's ECR country list
- If ECR, obtain emigration clearance through the eMigrate system (emigrate.gov.in) before departure — it is checked at Indian airports
- Deal only with recruiting agents registered with the Protector General of Emigrants; never deal with sub-agents
- Know the legal fee cap: a registered recruiting agent may not charge more than Rs 30,000 plus GST in service charges under current MEA advisories (MEA's older emigration page still shows the superseded figure of 45 days' wages capped at Rs 20,000)
Things to watch
- ECNR passport holders do not need emigration clearance, but the Bahraini employer must still obtain the LMRA permit before you travel
- Since Feb 2024 a visitor visa cannot be converted to a work visa unless the same Bahraini sponsor employs you — do not fly on a visit visa hoping to switch
- Bahrain's self-sponsored 'flexi permit' was abolished in 2022-23; there is no legal way to work in Bahrain without an employer sponsor
- MEA's page lists 17 ECR countries while some other official sources say 18 (South Sudan) — Bahrain appears on every version of the list
